GRX FILM ADDS BARRIER AND STRENGTH TO PAPER AND PAPERBOARD
NEW CASTLE, DE - September 2, 2003 - AET Films, North America's leading manufacturer of oriented polypropylene films (OPP), is providing unique new shelf appeal and protection for powdered detergent cartons. Film-laminated cartons are not new to the market, but their use for clothes detergent powders could be an emerging trend. Increasingly, detergent manufacturers are enhancing their products with whiteners, improved cleaners, and new scents. Many of these ingredients are highly hygroscopic, and the powders are susceptible to clumping and caking when subjected to ambient moisture. Laminating film to paperboard yields cartons that provide an improved moisture barrier over conventional cartons. AET's GRX film lends high-performance barrier protection, brighter graphics, and enhanced carton strength to several of the world's leading detergent brands.
Glossier film-faced cartons stand out on store shelves, providing a promotional benefit. GRX can be utilized as barrier protection against grease stains for products such as pet foods and other high-fat products, and can be used to strengthen beverage cartons for improved moisture and tear resistance. Because GRX film adds structural strength, some converters have chosen to reduce paperboard caliper on laminated cartons for improved economics. The film can be metallized for added shelf impact and additional barrier properties.
Converters may choose to print the paperboard or GRX film and then laminate in-line via conventional adhesives, energy-cured adhesives, or poly-extrusions. Alternatively, the film can be pre-laminated to the paperboard and then surface printed. The printed, laminated paperboard is subsequently die-cut, folded, and glued into cartons. According to Bill Minnich, Market Manager for GRX, "The acrylic coated surface of GRX film provides critical performance properties for customers: great ink and adhesive anchorage, excellent coefficient of friction (COF) for highly accurate printing registration, and better tracking and feeding on high-speed packaging lines. The film also protects cartons against scuffing and wear."
